Service 01

Custom Software Development

What it includes
Discovery, product architecture, engineering, testing, deployment, and long-term maintenance of custom applications built to the specific needs of a business.
The problem it addresses
Off-the-shelf software rarely fits the exact shape of the operations it is meant to support. We build the software that does.
Delivery approach
Small senior teams working in short, reviewable increments alongside the client, with visible artefacts each week and no hidden work.
Technical considerations
Language, framework, and platform choices are made from the constraints of the problem. We are comfortable across TypeScript, Python, Go, Java, and .NET, and we favour boring, well-supported technologies.

What it includes
Design and implementation of customer-facing and internal web applications, including accessibility, performance, and search visibility as first-class concerns.
The problem it addresses
Web applications sit closest to the people who use them. A slow, awkward, or fragile interface is felt every day.
Delivery approach
Interface design, component systems, front-end engineering, and integration with back-end services, delivered as one continuous track rather than a hand-off between disciplines.
Technical considerations
Modern component frameworks, server rendering where it helps performance and SEO, progressive enhancement where users cannot rely on JavaScript.

Backend Development

What it includes
Design and implementation of the services, data models, and workflows that stand behind an application — the layer that has to remain correct under load.
The problem it addresses
Most product risk lives in the back-end. Data integrity, transactional behaviour, and evolving business rules quietly determine how much a system can be trusted.
Delivery approach
Clean domain modelling, explicit boundaries between services, automated tests around behaviours that matter, and observable interfaces from the first release.
Technical considerations
Relational and document stores, message brokers, background workers, and the tooling required to reason about system behaviour after it is deployed.

Frontend Development

What it includes
Interface implementation with attention to accessibility, keyboard interaction, colour contrast, motion preferences, and predictable performance across devices.
The problem it addresses
A front-end that is not built with care is difficult to change. Every future feature costs more than it should, and every user pays a small tax each session.
Delivery approach
Design tokens, shared component libraries, typed data contracts with the back-end, and disciplined attention to bundle size and rendering behaviour.
Technical considerations
Component-based frameworks, static and server rendering, CSS design systems, and web platform features used in preference to heavy libraries where possible.

API Development & Integration

What it includes
Design and implementation of new APIs, as well as integration between existing systems, whether internal services, third-party platforms, or partner interfaces.
The problem it addresses
As organisations grow, the space between systems becomes the hardest part of the estate. Integration debt compounds silently.
Delivery approach
Contract-first design, explicit versioning, sensible authentication, and end-to-end tests that describe how the systems are expected to behave together.
Technical considerations
REST, GraphQL, event-driven interfaces, and webhook patterns, selected for the shape of the data and the operational needs of both sides.

Cloud Infrastructure

What it includes
Design, implementation, and operation of cloud environments — networking, compute, storage, identity, and delivery pipelines described as code.
The problem it addresses
Cloud environments that grew by accident become expensive, fragile, and difficult to reason about. New engineers cannot find their way in.
Delivery approach
Infrastructure as code, environment parity, well-defined boundaries between accounts and workloads, and a clear operating model for the client's team.
Technical considerations
AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, and self-hosted platforms, along with the container, serverless, and orchestration tooling appropriate to each.

What it includes
Architectural review, technology strategy, technical due diligence, and pragmatic advice on the trade-offs that matter for a specific business.
The problem it addresses
Technology decisions taken without a second view are difficult to reverse. A short, well-scoped engagement can prevent large downstream costs.
Delivery approach
Short engagements with a defined artefact: a written assessment, a decision record, a roadmap, or a targeted proof of concept.
Technical considerations

System Modernisation

What it includes
Careful modernisation of systems that have outgrown their original design, without discarding the business knowledge encoded in them.
The problem it addresses
Legacy systems are not old — they are load-bearing. A rewrite that ignores that fact usually replaces one set of problems with a worse set.
Delivery approach
Incremental migration paths, strangler patterns, parallel runs, and reversible steps, with the client's operations remaining stable throughout.
Technical considerations

What it includes

The problem it addresses
Security failures are usually design failures with delayed consequences. It is far cheaper to correct them before they are exploited than after.
Delivery approach

What it includes

Data that cannot be trusted is worse than no data at all. Reliability, lineage, and governance are what make analytics useful.

What it includes

The problem it addresses
Quality is not tested into a product at the end. It is built in throughout, or it is absent throughout.

What it includes
Continued care of systems after initial delivery — small changes, dependency updates, monitoring, incident response, and quiet operational work.
The problem it addresses
Software that is not maintained decays. The most expensive systems are the ones nobody has touched in a year and now nobody wants to.
Delivery approach
Predictable maintenance cadences, clear runbooks, on-call arrangements agreed in writing, and steady, undramatic upkeep.
Technical considerations
Monitoring and alerting appropriate to the system, dependency management, and the operational discipline required to keep a running system boring.
